Facts

   •  Fear of Rain was originally filmed under the working title I Saw a Man with Yellow Eyes.
   •  Castille Landon aimed to change the way mental illness was represented in film with Fear of Rain.
   •  Israel Broussard says that what attracted him to the role was that Caleb was supportive and nice, and that he likes to play good-hearted characters.
   •  Madison Iseman feels that the story could have been narrated in two ways – one of them being where the audience sees Rain separately – but Landon’s decision to show the film from Rain’s perspective is what appealed to her the most.

Plot

Fear of Rain follows its eponymous protagonist, Rain. Teenager, Rain Burroughs, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, which makes it difficult for her to navigate through everyday life. She has the tough job of differentiating illusion from reality every single day. It comes as no surprise when her parents refuse to believe her claims that their neighbour has kidnapped a child. With nowhere left to turn to, Rain enlists the help of her charming classmate, Caleb. Caleb is the only one who believes her – the only fix here is that Rain is not sure if Caleb himself is real, or just a figment of her imagination.

Review

Madison Iseman riding in a car and looking terrified with her blonde hair down in a scene from the 2021 movie "Fear of Rain"

While the film begins with the predictive trope of the heroine walking through murky woods, things pick up soon as we get into it. The implications of Rain’s schizophrenia are well fleshed out as we see her conversations with her therapist, her parents, and her isolation at school. While the dilemma of her fears being real or not does, naturally, occupy centre-stage, the focus is on the manifestations of Rain’s illness. This is achieved through sound effects as well as Landon’s screenplay, that is adept at incorporating the inaccuracies of Rain’s illness. However, the direction is not quite up to the mark. Moreover, Fear of Rain fails to tie up all its loose ends by the climax, leaving us with a somewhat clumsy cinematic picture. Overall, though, it is an interesting premise with great performances and does deserve a watch.
