Background

The song was originally released as their debut single in early 1986. It peaked at number 72 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and at number 18 and number 37 on the U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks and Adult Contemporary chart, respectively. The track was then re-released in 1987 after the success of The Way It Is and peaked at number 14 on the Hot 100. The introductory passage of the song quotes Charles Ives' work "The Alcotts."

In 2000, country singer Sara Evans covered the song on her 2x platinum album "Born to Fly".

In 2004, indie singer-songwriter Skott Freedman released a piano version of the song on his album "Judge a Book".
