Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena (EAH Jena) was founded on 1 October 1991 as one of the first institutions of higher education of its kind in the newly founded federal states of Germany. Short periods of studying and a practical orientation complement the education at traditional universities and technical universities perfectly well. Currently, the nine departments of the Jena University of Applied Sciences offer a lot of Bachelor and Master programs. Since the beginning summer semester 2012, it bears the name of the entrepreneur Ernst Abbe.

History

During the trial operation in the winter semester 1991, 272 students joined, and nowadays about 4,600 students are enrolled at the EAH Jena. After extensive renovation and redesign, at the end of 2001, all departments, the university administration as well as the central library with the patent and research site moved to the campus in the Carl-Zeiss-Promenade.

In the summer semester 2012, the FH Jena was renamed to Ernst Abbe Fachhochschule - University of Applied Sciences. Due to changes in the Higher Education Act in October 2014, an additional change of name followed. The new name Ernst Abbe Hochschule Jena intended to clarify the competences of the university in the areas of teaching and research.

The Education programs of the Ernst Abbe Hochschule Jena is based on three pillars:

  • Students have the option to choose between a total of 24 bachelor's and 20 master's degree programs. In addition, several dual degree programs and some distance learning courses are offered.

    Research and Development

    The research and development of EAH Jena includes five research priorities:

  • Start up and run businesses
  • As part of the mandatory practical phase and through the production of thesis with external partners takes students on the broad base of research and development tasks. Under the leadership of professors, mostly in cooperation with companies and institutions, annually about 110 research projects are carried out. The case funds raised by third parties in the amount of approximately 8.8 million EUR enables the financing of 128 additional employees, who are exclusively responsible for research tasks.

    Graduation and Doctoral degrees

    In summer and winter semester 2014 together, 921 students completed their studies successfully. This corresponds to a rate of 74.4%. For 2015, the university intends to achieve a rate of 80%.

    In the same year, 12 cooperative doctoral degrees were made possible. There are contractual arrangements with the Technische Universität Ilmenau and the University of Jena, which should also include cooperation in collaborative doctoral programmes and facilitate access of university graduates with a master's degree to cooperative doctoral degrees.

    Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena Campus

    The campus of EAH Jena is located in the premises of Carl Zeiss AG. Located southwest of the city center of Jena, the university can be reached quickly. After refurbishment of the last building in October 2008 of 26,000 m2 including seven classrooms and 124 laboratories - large campus with a total of 1,500 rooms. The Studentenwerk Thüringen operates on the grounds of EAH Jena a canteen, a cafeteria, a café-bar and a dormitory. The library of the university includes approximately 300,000 books, videos and CDs. Since June 1999, the Ernst Abbe University Jena has its own climatological station. The local climate is recorded and can be accessed on the Internet.

    Networks

    The EAH Jena is a member of numerous networks. Together with other East German universities it is on the campaign in the Far East studying involved and when the Thuringian university network Campus Thuringia registered.
