History

The current Endeavour Bridge opened to traffic in May 1951.

It was built as part of diversion of the Cooks River required by the expansion of the Mascot Aerodrome. The bridge was constructed before the water flow was diverted beneath it.

It was part of the upgrade of General Holmes Drive extension to six lanes, which was the first 'county road' upgraded as part of the County of Cumberland Scheme.

Origin of the name

Endeavour Bridge takes its name from the HMB Endeavour, the ship commanded by Captain James Cook, an English explorer, navigator and cartographer. Captain Cook and the crew of the Endeavour were the first recorded European expedition to navigate and map the eastern coastline of Australia. They arrived in nearby Botany Bay in 1770.
