Plan

  • Aswan (0 km)
  • border (450 km)
  • Wadi Halfa (500 km)
  • May 2008
  • Nearby countries such as Ethiopia, South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda are planning if not starting to build standard gauge (1,435 mm (4 ft 8 12 in) gauge) railways south of Sudan. Sooner or later it would be desirable to connect Egypt with these countries via Sudan. Break of gauge stations are best located on the outskirts of major cities, so that traffic to and from such cities do not need to be transshipped.
  • Gauge

  • Egypt - 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 12 in) gauge
  • Sudan - 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) gauge
  • Dual gauge is viable given the large 368mm (14.5") difference in the gauges.
  • Ferry

A weekly ferry service on the Nile River connects the Egyptian railhead at Aswan with the Sudan railhead at Wadi Halfa.
