Edward Thomas Devine (May 6, 1867 - February 27, 1948) was a professor at Columbia University and American University who advocated for social welfare.
Biography
He was born on May 6, 1867 near Union, Iowa to John Devine and Laura Hall. He attended Cornell College where he received a B.A. in 1887 and a M.A. in 1889. In 1889 he married Hattie Evelyn Scovill and they had two children. In 1889 the University of Pennsylvania awarded him a Ph.D. in economics.
In 1896 he became general secretary of the New York City chapter of the Charity Organization Society.
He was the dean of the graduate school and a professor of social economics at American University from 1926 to 1928.
He died on February 27, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois.
