Bunn then took his master's degree in English from St. Andrew-on-Hudson in New York City and his doctorate in philosophy from the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. He held several honorary degrees, and honors from the governments of West Germany, Austria and Peru.

Father Bunn is remembered for his leadership during a time of post-Second World War expansion. Through his leadership, Georgetown renamed its foreign service program the Edmund A. Bunn came to Georgetown from the University of Scranton in 1948 to serve as regent of the school’s dental and nursing schools.
