Earls House Hospital is a hospital located in County Durham, England, and lies on a large site just north west of Durham city. It is now known as Lancaster Road Hospital. The hospital is run by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust who have over 20 hospitals and inpatient services. It formerly served as the headquarters for the old County Durham and Darlington Priority Services NHS trust.

History

Earls House was formerly known as Earl's House Industrial School around 1894-1899 began as a vocational residential school for children with special academic needs. The school closed in 1922. . By 1928, it became known as Earls House Sanatorium and remained a sanatorium until the 1960s when it became part of the Hospital It is spread over a very spacious site. The original red brick sections of the hospital provide offices for County Durham Primary Care Trust. Many of the newer ‘villas’ that became used as the main housing for people with learning disabilities closed down in the 1990s when Care in the community was seen to be the only way to cut costs.

Redevelopment and renaming

In 2008 contracts were signed for construction to begin on the Earls House Hospital site for a new facility "... [to] provide adult mental health and learning disability services and has been designed to provide people with a safe, homely and therapeutic environment." In 2010 the renamed 17.9 million (English pounds) Lanchester Road Hospital opened. It is a modern mental health facility and support centre.

There are seven wards at Lancaster Road Hospital.

Bek - learning disability (adults) assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services

Farnham - adult inpatient services, male

Harland - low secure forensic long term treatment ward for male adults with a learning disability

Langley - low secure forensic rehabilitation ward for male adults with a learning disability

Ramsey - learning disability (adults) assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services

Roseberry, Bowes Lyon Unit - older people's assessment and treatment inpatient services

Tunstall - adult inpatient services, female

Other services include Appleton House (North pf England Commissioning Support Unit, faith and chaplaincy services, pharmacy and coffee shop.
