Dr. Durr-e-Shahwar Syed (Sindhi: ڊاڪٽر درشهوار سيد‎) was born on 21 March 1940 at village Sann, Sindh Dadu District, Sindh. She was the daughter of well-known Nationalist leader G.M. Syed. She was progressive literary figure and had studied religion, culture, civilization and history of not only Sindh but the world at large. She died on 26 December 1997 at Karachi.

Early age

Dr. Durr-e-Shahwar Syed got her early education in her native place at Sann, Sindh. It was a rare precedent at that time for Syeds to get her daughters formally educated but with the invincible support and indefatigable efforts of Sain G. M. Syed, she continued her education in spite of many hurdles and barriers in society. Her brothers and relatives had great objection for her higher education. At an early age Dr Dur-e-Shahwar moved to Karachi in order to quench her thirst for knowledge. She resided at Hyder Manzil with some of her family members.

Education

She was educated in Karachi. She did Master of Arts (Philosophy) in 1969 from University of Karachi. On the wish of her father she went England in 1978 where she completed her Master of Arts in History. She got Doctor of Philosophy degree from University of Edinburgh in 1994. Her research work was the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.

Professional career

After returning to country she worked formerly as Cooperative teacher and later as Assistant professor in Philosophy department University of Karachi from 1991 to 1996 she was the director of Shah Abdul Latif Chair. Her Major work, during this tenure, was Bibliography on Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. Her PhD research thesis was published by Sindhi Adabi Board in 1988. Its Urdu translation was published in 1994 which was admired in all the four provinces of Pakistan.

Publications

She wrote a number of research articles in Sindhi, Urdu and English languages. She wrote Shah Latif Ji Mousiqui (1992), Bibliography on Shah Latif (1994), Shah Jo Risalo (1994), Tahaqeek jo Tareekaykar (1995) Latif-e-Kahaanya, Shah Latif : Shaeri and fiker.

Awards

She received countless awards for her Literary Services such as: Cash Awards by Government of Sindh 1988, Dr. Ernest Trumpp Award, Latif Gold Medal Award 1989, Pir Hassam-ud-Din Rashidi Award by Sindh Cultural Council Karachi 1993, Sachal Congress Award by SGA 1981.

Responsibilities

She remained member of Sindhi Adabi Board, Shah Latif Chair advisory board and member of Sindhi Language governing body. She also founded (ASWA) All Sindh Woman Association.

Death

She died on 26 December 1997 at Karachi and was buried in her ancestral graveyard at village Sann, Sindh.
