Social rivalry
The rivalry between those two Thessalonikian Macedonian clubs can be traced back to a rivalry between local Greeks (Αris) and Greek refugees from Asia Minor, Pontus and Constantinople (PAOK) who settled in the region of Macedonia after the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923. The antagonism between those social groups was expressed in many ways, one of them being football after the establishment of PAOK in 1926.
Football rivalry
Aris and PAOK are traditional rivals in other sports as well, specially in basketball, where in the 1980s they were bashing for the Championship. As it concerns football, the minute after PAOK was formed, he constantly contested Aris primacy in the local championship, since up to 1959, when the Greek national championship was established in its current form, it was conducted in a way where the champions of the three major local championships in Thessaloniki, Athens and Piraeus were playing each other for the title. Their conflict continued in the following years up to modern times with both clubs contend for the title of the greatest and most successful football club in Northern Greece, leading many times in serious incidents between their supporters.
