Silent News
In January 1969 the first newspaper directed towards a deaf audience was created. It was founded by Julius Wiggins. It was from this newspaper that deaf news was born. The paper struggled to survive, and finally ceased publication but when it was in a competition with DeafNation and Newswaves it out lived both of them. They no longer distribute to subscriber's houses but they did change into an easily accessible website called SIGNews.
The Buff and Blue
CURRENTLY
This is Gallaudet University’s School newspaper. What started as a printed hard copy magazine is now an online informational website that has all the latest updates of current events that are happening within the school campus as well as big news that relates to the deaf world. They have weekly funny comics and updates on how their school team is doing in all types of sports. There are numerous articles about current events. The buff and blue keeps the students, factuality, alumni and any other curious individual informed of what is happening at the university.
HISTORY When Gallaudet opened in 1892 so did the Buff and Blue. It was Dr. J. C. Gordon that decided the name even though the magazine was created by the students and supported financially by the staff. However before this magazine could be distributed the students had to create a committee to spread the word the word about the project they were working on. They printed out a letter and sent it to all the alumni and Gallaudet supporters that explained what the magazine would look like, what the price would be and what kind of issues the students would write about within the magazine. The feedback they received was very positive and because there was so much support for the idea that the students were able to move forward with developing the Buff and Blue.
