He was considered one of top ranked defensive ends in the draft.
2016 Season

Buckner was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round with the seventh overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. Buckner set lofty goals for his rookie season, saying “To be honest, to be rookie of the year. That’s my goal.” He also set statistical goals to end the season with 70 tackles & 6 sacks. Buckner started in 15 games in 2016, recording 73 tackles and six sacks, accomplishing his pre-season goals. Buckner led all NFL defensive lineman with 1,108 snaps on the season and ranked second with 73 tackles. His six sacks were good for fourth among rookies.
2017 Season

This offseason, Buckner has been training with Seattle Seahawks' Michael Bennett in his home state Hawaii at the HOP (Hawaii Optimum Performance) Training NFL Camp. Every offseason, players representing multiple teams come out to the island to train alongside Bennett, one of the NFL’s top defensive linemen. Bennett has high expectations for Buckner's future saying in an interview "I'm lucky to be working with a guy like that. I think DeForest will eventually be a Defensive Player of the Year. I think he has the talent to be able to do that. I keep telling him there's nobody like him. He's not normal. His body, his physique, his speed, it's not normal. So when you're not normal you can do not normal things and winning defensive MVP is not normal for most people. I think he has the capability of doing that." Buckner has his own goals for 2017. During Training Camp Buckner said "I've got some personal goals. Obviously, I want to get more sacks this year. My personal goal is 10 sacks and some TFLs [tackles for loss] and a bunch of tackles. I mean, that's really my main goal, getting at least 10 sacks this year because I know I can do it. I mean, I missed a couple last year and I just want to redeem myself from last year." In the season opener Buckner and the defense played well against the Carolina Panthers holding QB Cam Newton to only 171 yards passing & 3 yards rushing.
