High school Career

Ayton was born in the Bahamas and moved to San Diego, California in the United States. In San Diego he attended Balboa City School before transferring to Hillcrest Academy in Phoenix, Arizona prior to his junior year.

Representing the World Select team, he saw 26:36 minutes of action at the 2016 Nike Hoop Summit, chipping in with eight points to go along with seven rebounds.
Recruiting

Ayton is considered the top player in the 2017 recruiting class by Scout.com, Rivals.com and ESPN. In 2015 he was ranked by Scout as the top prospect in all of high school in their "Ultimate 100" list.

Ayton announced his verbal commitment on Septhember 6, 2016. He had narrowed his choices between three schools: Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky. On the eve of the announcement, Kansas was believed to be the heavy favorite to land Ayton. But on ESPN he made his surprising verbal commitment to play for the Arizona Wildcats.
National team career
Ayton participated in the 2016 Centrobasket, the regional basketball championship of FIBA Americas for the Central American and Caribbean subzone where he averaged a tournament-leading 11.1 rebounds per game.
