Daniela Panetta is an Italian jazz vocalist, composer, lyricist and vocalese performer.

She performs with diverse formations ranging from duo to big band. Her projects encompass not only traditional and contemporary jazz, but include also Italian musica d'autore. She performed in well-known european jazz clubs as well as in several notorious theatres: Rex Theatre (Paris), Berliner Philharmonie (Berlin), Teatro Smeraldo (Milan), Teatro Romano (Verona), Teatro Regio (Turin), Teatro Sistina (Rome), and Teatro Ariston (S. Remo). She also participated to several international jazz festivals: Umbria Jazz, Novara Jazz Festival, Bruxelles Jazz Fest, Tunisi Jazz, Falaut – Festival Internazionale del Flauto, Ramatuelle Fest, S. Remo Blues and Verona Jazz.

Career

In 1992 she cooperated with Sandro Cerino to the production of songs of his own composition. Their cooperation continues today for projects like Ampio Respiro.

In 1993 M° Giorgio Gaslini chose her for the vocal quintet “Le Pause del Silenzio”, project that won the “Premio Cetra” in 1998.

In 1994 she took part with vocalist Paola Luffarelli to the “Vocaland” quintet, the rhythmic section of which was formed by Stefano Bassi, Roberto Piccolo and Toni Arco. The quintet received recognition at festival and concourses like “Summertime Jazz” (Prato, Arcore Jazz) and “Viva il jazz” (Teatro Smeraldo, Milano – 17 October 1999). The latter was broadcast by Italian television RAI 1.

In 1995 she participated to the making of the soundtrack of “Semaforo Verde”, a theatrical play by Ariele d’Ambrosio and Sandro Cerino. In such occasion she recorded both as soloist and as choir director. The play was presented at the “International Festival of Edinburgh”.

In 1996 she cooperated with Arrigo Cappelletti, Lucio Terzano and Vittorio Marinoni to the project “Fasi Comunicanti”, for which she recorded an album. She also created with Arrigo Cappelletti a duo bringing on stage unreleased songs of him for which she wrote the lyrics. In the same year she created with pianist Mell Morcone the “Wesuvio Swing Quartet”, ensemble dedicated to reinterpreting classical and modern songs of the Neapolitan music. With Mell Morcone and Stefano Corradi Daniela re-elaborated and proposed some classics of the Italian canzone d’autore.

In 1997 she created with Fabrizio Bernasconi and Lucio Terzano the “Cole Porter Memories trio”. Panetta professional activity intensified also in other music areas: after meeting Carmelo La Bionda of the “LaBionda Production” she became music consultant for the “Logic Studio” of Milan, where she cooperated to the production of albums, jingles and soundtracks.

In 1998 Panetta created with Sandro Cerino the duo Ampio Respiro, with which she performed in radio and TV shows (Mediolanum Channel – June 2003; Tele Nettuno – December 2004) as well as several jazz festivals. The same year she recorded the album “En Voyage” with the “Vocaland” quintet, co-signing two songs with Richard Galliano and Carla Bley.

In 1999 the guitarist and composer Antonio Scarano asked her to cooperate with him to the production of some songs of his own composition. He also involved her in the “Vesuview Jazz Trio”, an ensemble reinterpreting songs of the Neapolitan tradition.

In 2000 Paolo Conte wanted her as a vocalist for his album “Razmataz” and the following international tour. The same year the record label WEA chose her as vocal-coach of the rockstar Antony Kiedis for the presentation of the album Californication at MTV Italy.

In 2001 she was finalist with “Vocaland” at the Italian concours “Massimo Urbani” (Urbisaglia – Macerata).

In 2002 Panetta created with Fabrizio Bernasconi, Roberto Piccolo and Massimo Pintori a tribute project to Billie Holiday.

In 2003 she contributes to the contemporary piece “Metrò Nivasci” both as solo artist and as backing vocalist. The music is by Antonio Scarano and the lyrics by Gianvito Pezzella.

In 2004 she participates with “Ampio Respiro” to the TV-show “RAI SAT Nettuno” on Italian television RAI 2. Additionally she participates to the jazz festivals “Rivoltainmusica Jazz” and “Falaut – Festival Internazionale del Flauto”.

In 2005 the “Art Symposia of New York” called Panetta to teach jazz singing to their intermediate class and chose her to be the assistant of Michele Hendricks for the masterclass of the Spoleto’s summer workshop. During such workshop she performed at the “Spoleto Estate” festival with “Ampio Respiro”. The same year she video-interviewed Jon Hendricks for Radio SNJ at Blue Note of Milan on the history of vocalese and scat.

In 2006 she recorded for the pianist and composer Gianmario Liuni the album “Un soffio soltanto”. Panetta also performed with him in Italy together with Tito Mangialajo, Alessio Pacifico, Sandro Cerino, Giulio Visibelli and Elio Marchesini.

In 2007 was released the album “Ampio Respiro”. The album was presented at the “Suonintorno Festival” in Bergamo and at the “Lagarina Jazz Festival” in Ala di Trento. 5 October 2007 the duo participated at the show “La stanza della musica” on Italian radio “RADIO 3”. With the duo “Ampio Respiro” she also presented the project for Unicef “Schegge” and she then recorded the album on Q Disc at the “Museo S. Agostino” in Genova.

In 2008 she was leading voice for theatrical jazz piece “Il giorno della memoria”. Music and direction are by Sanro Cerino and lyrics by Ivano Malcotti. Panetta co-signed some of the compositions and vocal adaptations of the lyrics. The same year she performed during the “Spoleto Estate” Festival at the “Faculty” concert with Harold Danko, Jerry Dodgion, Michele Hendricks, Guido Leone, CJ Everett and Giuseppe Bassi.

In 2009, in occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of Billie Holiday she created a tribute project in her honour with Fabrizio Bernasconi, Roberto Piccolo and Massimo Pintori. That year she performed at the “Spoleto Estate” Festival with Marco Di Battista, Cristian Panetto and C.J. Everett in the theatrical piece “Non avevano cravatte”.
