Dangote Industries Tanzania Thermal Power Station, if licensed by the Tanzanian government, will be a 75 megawatt coal-fired thermal power plant in Tanzania, the second-largest economy in the East African Community.

Contents

Location

The power plant will be located in Mtwara, approximately 562 kilometres (349 mi) by road, south of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city and commercial capital. The approximate coordinates of the power plant will be:10°18'33.0"S, 40°10'42.0"E (Latitude:-10.309167; Longitude:40.178333). The coordinates are approximate because the plant does not yet show up on most publicly available maps.

Overview

The power station will be owned and operated by Dangote Industries Tanzania Limited. It will lie adjacent to the US $500 million cement factory, owned by the Dangote Group. When approved, the power plant is expected to power the cement factory as well as the residential and commercial development complex around the factory. As of November 2014, the cement factory is under construction, with commissioning expected in 2015. When fully operational, the factory will produce 3 million tonnes of cement every year. Dangote Cement is the largest manufacturer of cement on the African continent, producing approximately 47 million metric tonnes annually as of November 2014.
