On July 31, 2017, Imus announced on his radio show that McShane would be leaving the Imus in the Morning program at the end of 2017. According to Imus, Fox had been understanding about McShane's limited availability at Fox due to his Imus duties, but with Bill Shine leaving the network, McShane was informed that he would have to make himself more readily available to Fox News. Imus said "lightning doesn't strike three times", meaning, after the successful stints as Imus newsmen by Charles McCord and Connell McShane, it would be a challenge finding an appropriate successor.
