The College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) is a public engineering college in Chennai, India. Founded in 1794, this college is a perfect example of a venerable British Indian Educational Institution. Its master piece of architecture in white cut stone, red sandstone and brick not matched by many structures in Chennai and sets this bicentennial college apart.

History
Due to the growing need for surveyors by the East India Company, the 'School of Survey' was established in a building near Fort St. George on the suggestion of Michael Topping in 1794. This school was one of the first of its kind in the country and it started out with 8 boys. It became the Civil Engineering School in 1858 and was rechristened as College of Engineering in 1859, with the inclusion of a mechanical engineering course. The college was shifted for a short period to Kalasa Mahal, Chepauk, before settling at its present location in 1920.
College of Engineering, Guindy is one of the first institutes in India to offer degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication, Highway Engineering and Printing Technology.
In 1978 College of Engineering became the principal seat of Anna University.[1]
Academics
College of Engineering, Guindy offers undergraduate Engineering degrees in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Geoinformatics, Agricultural & Irrigation Engineering, Bio Medical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mining Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Information Technology and Printing Technology. It also offers postgraduate degrees such as MBA, MCA, M.E., M.Sc. M.Tech M.S. by Research and Ph.D.programmes.
CEG has 16 Departments, 6 University Affiliated Centers, and 12 Research Centers where research programs are offered. With close ties with industry, excellent research practices and multiple extra-curricular options, the institution advances the progression of the student's quest for knowledge.
Accolades
College of Engineering, Guindy had been awarded an A grade NAAC accreditation in 2014. Furthermore many of the departments have an NBA accreditation.
CEG has been ranked as the 48th best Engineering College of India in the Edu-Rand Rankings of 2015. The survey was done jointly by Edu, an Indian company and Rand Corporation, a non-profit American think-tank. It also secured rank 11 on the Top 100 Engineering Colleges in 2016 done by the Outlook Magazine. [2]
Location
Under State Government ownership, CEG covers around 223 acres of land right in the heart of Chennai. It serves as the main campus of Anna University.
Facilities
A library with the capacity to accommodate 400 readers and with over 1.5 lakh books and journals provides a plethora of knowledge to students and professors. Multiple campus stores are available that cater to a majority of the needs of the students. Facilities like a travel agency, post office, banks, atms, health center, tailor, barber shop and many more are located inside the campus.
The college has many sports facilities like large playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball court, swimming pool, athletic tracks and gymnasiums which are well maintained and open for students to display their talents.
The main CEG canteen located at the heart of the campus is well known for its tasty food. In addition to that, CEG also has cafeterias, coffee huts and restaurants located in campus that provide hygienic food.
The campus is also enabled with high speed WiFi which is accessible to the students and faculty.
Hostels
The college has 16 hostels which provide accommodation to over 3500 students. Separate international hostels are available to cater to the needs of international students and exchange students. Hostel messes are located in large centralized halls and serve nutritious meals at regular periods. The hostels accommodate not only undergraduate students but also postgraduate students and there is a separate hostel for NRIs and foreign nationals.
Students Services
Many centers have been placed to address all the needs of students. These include the SC/ST cell, Center for Professional Development Education, Center for International Affairs, Center for Women Empowerment and the Student Affairs.
Institutional Programs
Student wings of National Cadet Crops (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), National Sports Organisation (NSO) and Youth Red Cross (YRC also function on campus and conduct various activities which give back to the society.
