Professor Colin J. Stirling is a Scottish biological scientist and academic. He currently lives in Adelaide, South Australia where he has held the position of Vice Chancellor of Flinders University since 2015.

Career

Stirling holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Edinburgh and completed a PhD in genetics at the University of Glasgow. He was appointed Professor of Genetics at the University of Manchester in 1998. He was awarded a number of fellowships and awards while at Manchester and was appointed Education Dean in the Faculty of Life Sciences there in 2001. he was then promoted to Associate Vice-President eLearning in 2007 and Vice-President for Teaching and Learning in 2008. Stirling moved to Australia where he took up the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at Curtin University in 2011. He was later appointed Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor there, before accepting the position of Vice Chancellor of Flinders University in South Australia in 2015.

Role in university restructuring

Prior to his appointment in Adelaide, concerns were raised by the National Tertiary Education Union that Stirling could repeat restructuring plans implemented at Curtin with adverse impacts to staff and students. Plans to restructure Flinders University emerged in 2016, during Stirling's second year in the position.
