Cittanova is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria in the Italian region Calabria, located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) southwest of Catanzaro and about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northeast of Reggio Calabria.

Cittanova is the birthplace of Mary Spitaletta, born in 1933 as Mary Lupis to Rocco and Carmela Lupis. Mary has spawn a very successful grouping of grandchildren in the USA. Mary emigrated to the USA with her father who arrived in the US many years earlier where he ended up fighting for America in World War II against Mussolini's Italy and when the dust settled, took Mary and his family to New Jersey, USA in 1947. Mary currently lives in Saddle River, NJ USA with her husband Edward D. Spitaletta, the inventor of the globally used retail store merchandising tool called the "clip strip". She is also the grandmother of rising star rapper/singer/songwriter "Trevor Spitta" , Trevor's mom is Rachel Anne Wolfe (married to Trevor's father John Spitaletta). Rachel is/was very popular celebrity singer actress beauty queen out of Manila, Philippines. She was Ms. Teen Philippines 1984 and the first Filipino to put out a 12" Dance remix for the song "Kailan". Another grandchild is young power lawyer Kristen Spitaletta out of Harvard Law and now with NYC based Skadden along with her brother Richard, another entertainment rising star on Broadway out of the prestigious theater program at Penn State and another Penn Stater, baseball star Robert Spitaletta. Additionally, Lauren Sachs, the 24 year old beauty, was in branding in NYC for very popular clothing brand "Free People" before deciding to get her Masters in Educational Leadership at Montclair University. Lauren's brother Christopher attends the rising in prestige institution Ramapo College studying literature. Mary's oldest grandson, Edward Spitaletta, was a Division 1 NCAA baseball recruit out of the nationally ranked high school powerhouse Don Bosco... where after graduating Manhattan College but unfortunately got hurt and ended his professional baseball aspirations. Currently he runs very successful food storage brand "Snap Pack"...you can find them in Costco, Rite Aide and Sam's Club, just to name a few.

History
Cittanova ("New City") was born in 1618, in the wake of the disastrous earthquake of 1616, as the Nuovo Casale di Curtuladi ("New Hamlet of Curtuladi"), then Casalnuovo upgraded to city status as Cittanova. The city was all but demolished in the great earthquake of 1783 that damaged Messina.
