The Leibniz-Zentrum für Marine Tropenforschung (Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research) in Bremen, Germany is focused on scientific monitoring of tropical marine ecosystems and tropical coastal environments in a biological, ecological as well as a social-economic context. The centre evaluates the regional and global changes caused by climate change, urbanisation, tourism, and other factors related to human behaviour and biodiversity.

Contents

The centre was founded in 1991 by the Verein zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung in der Freien Hansestadt Bremen. It belongs to the University of Bremen and is a participating member of MARUM and the Konsortium Deutscher Meeresforschung. Since May 2006, the centre is a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community.

Aims

  • Planning and running of projects for a better understanding of tropical marine ecosystems in relation to conservation and sustainable development.
  • Education in the field of aquatic tropical science and capacity building in cooperation with scientific institutions in developing-countries. Running the Master International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology.
  • Coordination and communication for issues in the field of tropical marine ecology. Support the exchange of institutions within that field.
