María del Carmen Hernández Barrera (24 November 1930 – 19 July 2016) was a Spanish catechist and the co-founder of the Neocatechumenal Way. She was born in Olvega (Soria, Castile and Leon).

Life

Carmen Hernández obtained a degree in chemistry in Madrid. She then obtained a degree in theology at the Missionaries of Christ Jesus. In the 1960s, after the Second Vatican Council, she devoted herself to the poor and marginalized. She met Kiko Argüello, and together with the charisma of Charles de Foucauld they formed the Neocatechumenal Way in 1964.

She died on 19 July 2016 in Madrid at age 85.
