History

Careers in the Outdoors is a creation of niche job board network 247recruit, who working in partnership with VOS Media and the Outdoor Industries Association created the event. The first Careers In The Outdoors event was held in March 2010, alongside The Outdoors Show at the NEC Birmingham.

The Outdoors Show is the largest consumer outdoors show in Europe and incorporates up to 250 participating exhibitors each year. With 30,000 visitors in 2010, the number of visitors is expected to be in excess of 125,000 for 2011.

Exhibition

As well as a classical exhibition style layout, the show is a merger of both jobs fair and careers informational event. A dedicated Careers Zone allows visitors to meet prospective employers, chat to advisers, and browse jobs on the internet at an informal Careers Cafe.

A wide range of key speakers and employers from the outdoors sector speak about their own career journeys, what their day to day roles involve, and their advice for anyone considering a career in the outdoor education or leisure industries. Speakers include:

  • Adventure travel companies: Sunsail, Mark Warner
  • Outdoor activity centres: Go Ape, PGL, Go Ape
  • Youth development charities: Fairbridge
  • Expedition organisers:
  • Field study centres:
  • Outdoor clothing retailers: Blacks Leisure Group
  • Equipment manufacturers: Berghaus
  • All of the talks are recorded on video, which after the close of the physical event, can be viewed on the exhibition website and the OutdoorStaff YouTube Channel.
