Capel Manor House, Horsmonden, Kent is an important Modernist house. Designed by Michael Manser for John Howard, who had been a Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Private Secretary to Edward Heath, it was built during 1969-70. The house was constructed on the site, and within the remains, of a earlier mansion, built by Thomas Henry Wyatt in the Italianate style in the mid-nineteenth century and demolished in the 1960s. Pevsner describes the house as "a severe Miesian pavilion" and it is a significant building in the history of modern architecture, notable for its simple form and for its continuously glazed exterior walls which meet without corner mullions. In 2013 English Heritage recognised the house as one of the most important examples of modernist architecture in Britain, awarding it a Grade II* listing.
