Education

Mackie was born in Bronx, New York. Mackie graduated from McDonogh #35 Senior High School in 1985; McDonogh #35 was the first high school for African Americans in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mackie approached recruiters for the Georgia Institute of Technology while attending a college recruitment fair in New Orleans, LA. After inquiry regarding his preference for engineering, he was then directed to the recruiters for Morehouse College. Granted conditional admission to Morehouse, Calvin began a remedial reading course during his first semester at the college. Graduating on time, Calvin concurrently earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Morehouse College and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1990 through a dual-degree program offered between the institutions. Mackie matriculated at Georgia Tech, completing a Master of Science in 1992 and a Ph.D. in 1996, both in Mechanical Engineering.

Following graduation Dr. Mackie joined the faculty at Tulane University where he continued to pursue research related to heat transfer, fluid dynamics, energy efficiency and renewable energy until the Engineering Program was discontinued in 2006.

In 2002, he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. His research and education efforts have resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications and external federal, state and private funding. A professional speaker, in 1992 he co-founded Channel ZerO, an educational and motivational consulting company and has presented to numerous civic, educational institutions and Fortune 500 corporations.

In 2004–2005, he was a visiting professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Mackie is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi National Honor Societies.

He is currently a Lifetime Member of the National Society of Black Engineers.

Louisiana Recovery Authority

Most recently, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco appointed Dr. Mackie to the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA), the guiding agency to lead the state's rebuilding efforts following the catastrophic Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. As an ambassador of the LRA and a guest of the U.S. Embassy, he traveled to the country of Kuwait and appeared on Good Morning Kuwait and in numerous international Arab newspapers. As a resident of pre- and post-Katrina New Orleans, Dr. Mackie has also been featured prominently on HBO as a commentator on Spike Lee's documentary on the Katrina disaster entitled When The Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Parts; and has appeared on other national and local news shows talking about Katrina, including the PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and the Tom Joyner Morning Show.

Patents and publications

In November 1999, Benjamin Hall Thomas and Dr. Mackie received a patent on a device to retrofit luggage stowbins on 737 and 757 Boeing commercial airliners. (see patent summary)
