Production

In an interview promoting his film A Bigger Splash, Luca Guadagnino announced his intention to film an adaptation of André Aciman's novel Call Me by Your Name, taking inspiration from Maurice Pialat's À Nos Amours. Guadagnino said he wasn't interested at all in including explicit sex scenes in the film since the tone would deviate drastically from what he initially planned. He said, "I wanted the audience to completely rely on the emotional travel of these people and feel first love. I didn't want the audience to find any difference or discrimination toward these characters. It was important to me to create this powerful universality, because the whole idea of the movie is that the other person makes you beautiful — enlightens you, elevates you."

On May 23, 2016, it was reported that the film had begun principal photography in the previous two weeks, and that it would star Timothée Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Armie Hammer.
