Cabramatta West is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 32 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Fairfield. It is part of the south-western region. Cabramatta is a separate suburb, to the east.

History

Cabramatta West was originally a part of the suburb Cabramatta. In the dialect of the original inhabitants, the Cabrogal, a cabra was a tasty fresh water grub. A 100-acre (0.40 km2) block of land in the area, owned by the Bull family, was named Cabramatta Park and the name gradually spread to the surrounding area.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census of Population, there were 6,767 residents in Cabramatta West. In Cabramatta West, 41.1% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were Vietnam 26.8%, Cambodia 6.9% and Italy 2.3%. 19.4% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Vietnamese 38.2%, Cantonese 6.5%, Khmer 6.4%, Italian 3.2% and Serbian 3.1%. The most common responses for religion in Cabramatta West (State Suburbs) were Buddhism 41.5%, Catholic 23.8%, No Religion 8.4%, Eastern Orthodox 4.7% and Anglican 4.5%.

Commercial area

The primary shopping centre is located on what is known locally as Cooks Hill.
