Brookesia thieli was first described in 1960 by Brygoo and Domergue. The same species was also described as Brookesia antoetrae by Brygoo and Domergue in 1971. Brookesia antoetrae was synonymized with Brookesia thieli by Raxworthy and Nussbaum in 1995, but not all subsequent authors have accepted this conclusion. It is also commonly known as Domergue's leaf chameleon after Domergue, who described it in 1960 and 1971. According to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System, the taxonomic status of the species is valid.
