Early life
Brad was born in the small mill town of Corner Brook, Newfoundland to Levinia and Kerry Fillatre, who owned and operated funeral homes. He has one younger sister, Renita Fillatre, a visual artist and art therapist in Toronto. Brad spent many of his early years traveling the province alongside his parents as they tended to the family business. He attended Herdman Collegiate High School and later, The Memorial University of Newfoundland graduating with a BA in English Literature.
From a young age, Brad was drawn toward sound and all things musical. From the dusty, untended keys of the old piano at his grandmother’s cabin, to the sea of sound offered up by the second hand instruments in the local pawn shop. His unwavering curiosity finally persuaded his mother to purchase his first guitar. Immediately, Brad took over the rickety shed in his backyard and began writing his first songs. He threw himself into numerous bands, learning to master his craft among friends.
The Evelyn Room
In 2005, Brad relocated to Toronto. With a collection of songs already written, he soon formed a band with other newly relocated Newfoundlanders called The Evelyn Room. They recorded and independently released a self-titled EP in 2008. Off the strength of the EP and their intensely charismatic live show, The Evelyn Room went on to showcase at NXNE and made the short list of top 60 bands to watch for that year. The band also received several nominations at the XM Radio Verge Awards.
For Your Weakness EP
In February 2011 Brad set out on his own, and began recording his first solo EP For Your Weakness. He secured a record deal with indie label Sparks, and released the work in 2012 to eager anticipation. One of his biggest supporters became MTV in Los Angeles, where over the next two years his music would be used in numerous globally syndicated programs, bringing him international attention. For the first time, fans began sharing their stories with Brad, explaining how deeply they had been touched by his songs. From comments to personal messages, this feedback played a key role in propelling him forward towards shaping a new album. For the next year writing became the focus, readying himself for recording.
Strangers LP
During the winter of 2015, Brad enlisted the help of Adam Ferri of Orchard TV and Orchard Studios, located on a quaint apple orchard in Brampton, Ontario to co-produce the new material. The result of these sessions was Strangers, an eight song album that has already been described as sonically rich and emotionally driven. The album was released via Sparks Music in Canada, and internationally through INgrooves Music Group on August 12, 2016.
In June 2016, the music video and lead single, also named Strangers, was released exclusively by Exclaim online. who wrote, "The track comes from an album of the same name...it's an emotionally raw folk ballad that pairs Fillatre's gruff vocals with melodic acoustic guitar and slow-swelling string accompaniment. The black-and-white video is equally affecting, capturing a young boy dressed up as a cowboy out in the country, blissfully unaware that one day his heart will be broken"
Brad is currently performing at select venues across Canada.
