Amenities

In the village there is a Co-operative supermarket, which is located amongst a number of amenities including a butcher, estate agent, a Post Office, library, Chip Shop, hardware shop and several hairdressers. Further to this are public houses including The Nags Head and The Wilmot Arms, as well as two rival Indian restaurants and some takeaways.

Sport

The local football team Borrowash Victoria A.F.C. play in the East Midlands Counties Football League, but their home ground, Borrowash Road, is in the neighbouring Derby suburb of Spondon. The ground is situated next door to Graham Street Prims, who have a fierce rivalry with each other, and are currently competing in the same league. Also on the same ground is an archery club, Anchor Bowmen Archery Club. Other sporting affiliations include Ockbrook and Borrowash Lawn Tennis Club situated on Nottingham Road.

Education

Borrowash Playgroup offers non-compulsory education to children aged between one and three, as does Ashbrook Nursery School but this is specifically for ages two to four. Ashbrook Infant and Junior Schools provide compulsory education at Key Stages 1 and 2 for children aged 4–11.

For further educational facilities (non-fee paying), the closest secondary school is West Park in Spondon where, as of 2004, a sixth form no longer exists and consequently the closest provider of further education is Friesland School in Sandiacre. The nearest university is the University of Derby.

Transportation

There are four bus routes which serve Borrowash.

X17 Which provides direct services via the A52 between Derby and Borrowash and is operated by Notts & Derby

9/9A Which provides services between Derby, Chaddesden, Spondon, Ockbrook and Borrowash and is operated by Notts & Derby

Indigo which is a long distance route operated by Trent Barton serving Derby, Spondon, Borrowash Long Eaton, Chilwell and Nottingham. On Friday and Saturday evenings Indigo offers late night services between Derby and Nottingham via Borrowash.

i4 (formerly Rainbow 4), also operated by Trent Barton, provides connections between Derby, Spondon, Borrowash, Risley, Sandiacre, Stapleford and Nottingham. From Borrowash this is a substantially shorter journey time to Nottingham at around 45 minutes compared to 1 hour and 5 minutes on Indigo. Tickets are interchangeable between the two services.

Zoom This follows the route taken by Indigo between Long Eaton and Borrowash then from Borrowash follows the route of the X17 direct via the A52.

Y5 This service is operated by Yourbus and follows the Indigo route between Derby and Nottingham.

The expansion of service means that at peak times there are 27 passenger service buses per hour running through the village in all directions at peak times.

Several School services also serve Borrowash, transporting students to schools in Derby, Ockbrook, Long Eaton and Nottingham, as well as Notts & Derby route 2, which serves the Moy Park chicken processing factory in Ashbourne.

Whilst there is a plethora of bus routes in Borrowash there are no direct bus services to nearby Pride Park which plays host to a number of amenities including big name retailers, Numerous restaurants, public houses and fast food establishments, Derby County Football Club and a large number of employers throughout the development.

To the south of the village there was once a railway station (Borrowash railway station opened by the Midland Counties Railway) and the Derby Canal with two locks. The train station was built in 1839 and closed in 1966, But the train platform still served as stopping point in Borrowash to passengers until 1978, Then platform was completely removed. The canal is currently being restored, with the work on one of the locks nearing completion. The area which the canal used to run through is currently a public footpath linking Borrowash and Spondon.

Route 6 on the National Cycle network also connects Borrowash to Derby via a riverside path, which runs along the route of the canal to Elvaston then parallel to this for the duration of the journey.

Clubs, associations and community groups
