The Bonda language, also known as Bondo or Remo, is the Austroasiatic language spoken by the Bonda people of India. It had 2,568 speakers, all in Orissa, according to the 1951 Census of India, increasing to approximately 9,000 speakers in 2002 according to SIL.

Classification

The Bonda language belongs to the Southern subgroup of the Munda branch of the Austroasiatic language family. It is most closely related to the Gutob language.

Subdivisions

The Remo language can be divided into two varieties, Plains and Hill (Anderson 2008:557).

  • Plains or Lower Remo (Bonda): 35 villages in Khairpat block of Malkangiri district, Odisha. Total population 4,764 as of 1971. 3,500 speakers as of 2002 according to Ethnologue, though with few being monolingual.
  • Hill or Upper Remo (Bonda): in and around Mundlipada (Muɳɖlipaɖa) in the Jeypore Hills, southern Odisha. 5,570 speakers as of 2002 according to Ethnologue.
