Iowa House of Representatives (1996–2006)

In 1996, Dix made his first bid for the Iowa House of Representatives running unopposed for House District 21 (covered Butler and Grundy Counties from 1993-2002 before redistricting from the 2000 Census) vacated by Robert H. Renken. Iowa Congressional and Legislative districts were redrawn after the 2000 Census that went into effect for the 2002 election. From 2002 to 2006, Dix represented House District 17 (covered Butler and Bremer Counties from 2002-2012). He served five two-year terms in the Iowa House being reelected in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004.
Iowa's 1st Congressional District Primary (2006)

In 2006, Dix ran in the Republican Primary for Iowa's 1st Congressional District seat vacated by Jim Nussle.
Voting restrictions

During the 2017 legislative session, Dix voted to shorten both the amount of time one may cast an absentee ballot and the number of days one can vote at satellite polling sites, and he voted to require all voters to present a state-issued ID.
Minimum wage legislation

During the 2017 legislative session, Dix voted for House File 295 which eliminates local control in municipalities that voted to increase their own minimum wage locally.
Healthcare
Dix voted in support of House File 625, which eliminated the requirement that parents report on their state taxes whether or not they have healthcare for their children. In this bill, Dix also voted to eliminate the requirement that parents apply for healthcare coverage, such as Hawk-i or Medicaid, for their children.
Immigration
Dix voted for an amended form of Senate File 481. This bill eliminated elements of local control by requiring a local officer to comply and detain an immigrant who is guilty of three misdemeanors, non-violent felonies, and felonies until ICE arrives.
