Beyond the Pale is a Toronto-based Canadian world/roots fusion band. Their style is rooted in klezmer, Balkan and Romanian music but heavily accented with contemporary and North American styles including bluegrass, jazz, reggae, funk and classical chamber music. The name of the band evokes Eastern-European Pale of Settlement.

Beyond the Pale has toured across North America and Europe and released three CDs for which they have received a number of awards. The band has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Jewish Culture Festival in Kraków Poland, the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards and many other top festivals and theaters.

The group’s most recent CD “Postcards” (Borealis Records) showcases their characteristic versatility, traversing a vast and exotic musical landscape bound by no particular idiom but shaped by many. Like their first two CD releases, “Postcards” has received wide critical acclaim and a number of honours, including a leading four nominations and two wins from the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards (“Instrumental Ensemble of the Year” and “Pushing the Boundaries”). The band’s previous CD releases “Routes” and “Consensus” (Borealis Records, 2001 and 2004) also received honours from the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and the Canadian Independent Music Awards, Toronto Independent Music Awards and the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals Songwriting Competition.

Past collaborations have included the singers, Josh “Socalled” Dolgin, Vira Lozinsky , Yeva Medevedyuk and Dave Wall on recordings as well as performances with the legendary Theodore Bikel at Carnagie Hall in New York and the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival in Poland.
