Production

On 22 February 2011, three days prior to the series' airing, Derren Litten, the show's writer and creator, announced that he would be stopping writing the script; this wasn't the case.

Cast

Changes to the regular cast for season four saw the departure of Johnny Vegas (Geoff Maltby), the late Geoffrey Hutchings (Mel Harvey), Hannah Hobley (Chantelle Garvey), Nicholas Burns (Martin Weedon) and Abigail Cruttenden (Kate Weedon). As a result, several new characters were created for the fourth series of the show, including Shelley Longworth (Sam Wood), Tony Maudsley (Kenneth Du Beke), Kathryn Drysdale (Natalie Jones), Adam Gillen (Liam Conroy) and Selina Griffiths (Pauline Mahmood) as part of the regular cast.

The series saw cameo appearances from Cilla Black, Denise Welch, Bananarama's Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward, Melvyn Hayes and Shaun Foster-Conley.

Reception

Throughout the series' run, the show commanded an average of 7.77 million viewers – a sharp 1.25 million increase from the previous season. Critically, the first episode broke the still-standing ratings record for the show.

Similarly, at the time of broadcast, Metro reported the interest of holidays to Benidorm increase 159% upon the show's airing.

The fourth series was nominated for Best Situation Comedy at the 17th National Television Awards, eventually losing out to Outnumbered. Similarly, the show was also nominated for a TV Quick Award.
