History
1854 is remarkable if we consider the economic paradigm shift of Howrah, which is basically an area covering Shibpur, Saalkia, Ramrajatola. The British established the Howrah railway station during that time. The Howrah District was formed by division of Hooghly District. Both Howrah and Hooghly were under the zamindery of Burdwan Maharaja. Before that the whole area was under the Bhursoot Kingdom which ruled this area about 200 years by the Roy family. Pratap Narayan Roy was the most famous king of this dynasty. His widow wife successfully resisted the aggression of a Muslim invader from Odhisa with the help of a few local Bagdi community.Emperor Akbar was in the helm of Mughal Dynasty that time. He was very pleased and conferred the "Roy Baghini" title to that brave lady.
Festivals
Kalipujo (worship of goddess Kali) in the month of Chaitra is the most famous. In the same month Gajan is celebrated which is for god Shiva. During the month of September–October all the natives celebrate Durgapuja, which is the greatest festival of Bengal. Mainly three "Puja mandaps" are need to be mentioned here: Sashtitala, Bainan Bazar and Raypara. Although the budgets are low but you can find the true essence of celebration. Rathayatra of god Radhaballabh (radha krisha) of Ray/Bandopadhay family is celebrated in the month of Ashad (June–July) for approximately 500 years. Another very old Puja is celebrated during the month of Boisakh in Purbo Bainan Roy Para i.e. Bramha Puja.
