He is former Deputy mayor of Colombo, and founder and leader of the Muslim Tamil National Alliance (MTNA). The MTNA is an Islamic political party that advocates Tamil-Muslim political dialogue in the country. Married to Fathima Renoza Children - Amina (daughter) Nafees (son)
In May 2013, Salley was arrested by the Sri Lankan Forces under the notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act(PTA) for criticizing Anti-Muslim racism propagated by the state.
