Manufacture
Rice-making machines exist for sale, allowing broken rice or other ingredients to be shaped into rice-shaped pellets.
Corn rice
In North Korea, an artificial "corn rice", known as Okssal (옥쌀) or Gangnagssal (강낭쌀) was made from maize.
Plastic rice

Rice made from plastic has sometimes been reported in the media, manufactured in China and sold in the West and other countries. Snopes - a website that investigates urban-legends - has determined such reports are either hoaxes or unproven, pointing out that plastic rice grains would easily be detected after cooking, and likely more expensive to produce than real rice.

In December 2016, it was reported that 2.5 tonnes of plastic rice from China had been seized in Nigeria. However, after a few weeks, a spokesperson of the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health stated that, after preliminary tests performed by National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, that the material contained all the characteristics of rice and there was no evidence that plastic rice was circulating in the country. It was later announced by Yetunde Oni, The Acting Director General of NAFDAC, that the rice was contaminated with bacteria.
