Personal life

He was born to Veeru Devgan, is the brother of superstar Ajay Devgan and brother in law of actress Kajol. He studied in Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi. From a young age, he had a creative mind fascinated by stories and had the passion to tell them. He is an avid music lover and is trained in Tabla and Martial Arts. After graduating in 1989 from Bhagat Singh College, New Delhi he joined the film industry after being encouraged by Ajay Devgn and assisted on many movies with directors Sunil Agnihotri, Anees Bazmee and Raj Kanwar before finally making his debut as a director in 2000. He is married and has one son.

Career

He is best known for his work as a director for the path-breaking film Raju Chacha (2000), Blackmail (2005) and Haal-e-Dil (2008). He has worked with his brother Ajay Devgan in Raju Chacha along with his sister in law Kajol and Blackmail. Raju Chacha was one of the most expensive film of those times and for the first time in Bollywood history a lot of animation was used. It had a major worldwide opening with the biggest premier for a film then in Los Angeles. Raju Chacha got screen award for best animation and was nominated for best action and best film, and for best art direction. Music was path breaking as it was very different from other films of that time. It received mixed reviews but mainly appreciation for Anil's work. The Hindu stated, 'Raju Chacha is touted as a film for children because of 'courage comes in all sizes.', Planet bollywood said 'The film is very well done with great special effects. Director of a first-timer is adequate. He shows great promise as a director.' He was also the creative director in 'Son of Sardar' and also in 'Shivaay' (under pre-production as of March 2015).
