An Giang University (AGU) (Vietnamese: Đại học An Giang) was created as the second university in the Mekong Delta in 1999.[1] Before gaining approval from the Ministry of Education and Training, it was a teacher training college. The former rector of AGU was Dr. Vo Tong Xuan and Le Minh Tung. The new rector is Dr Vo Van Thang.

Remaining close to its roots as a teacher training college, AGU produces many graduates who will go on to teach in the surrounding provinces of An Giang, Kiên Giang, and Đồng Tháp. In addition to this, and because of Dr. Xuan's long history with agricultural and rice production, the school has a very strong agricultural program producing graduates who continue to promote sustainable agricultural development throughout the Mekong Delta.
A new, larger university structure is taking south of the current building. This is called South An Giang University. The old, North campus will be primarily used by those studying in the department of education. All teaching except the faculty of Education has been relocated.
AGU has embarked on an intensive effort to increase its collaborations to extend its influence throughout the Mekong Delta.
AGU has 10,695 students and 738 staff members and lecturers.
