Biography

Alison Sheridan is from Scotland. She is a professional archaeologist who has worked with the National Museums of Scotland (NMS) since 1987. She is the Head of Early Prehistory in the Archaeology Department of the museum. She was involved, as curator, in establishing the Early People gallery of the Museum of Scotland. During 2000-01, she led a team and curated the Royal Museum exhibition Heaven and Hell – and other Worlds of the Dead. She is associated with the carbon dating studies of the Archaeology Department.

She has studied pottery finds from different areas of Europe, compared them with finds from western and eastern Britain, and interpreted them according to "ceramic and monument typologies" in relation to the migration of Neolithic farmers from one region to the other. She has published many papers on ceramic typology, and identifies "four main strands of neolithisation" using ceramic typology and other traits.

Sheridan has developed research projects in association with other museums dealing with the Bronze Age faience ornaments of Britain, Ireland and neighboring areas of Northwestern Europe, and the Neolithic and Bronze Age jewellery shaped in the form of a jet in Britain and Ireland; publications were proposed on these studies.
