Personal background
Roland was born in Bogota, Colombia, the son of Raul Roland and Betty Castillo. He is the third of four children. His father was a journalist working on Colombian radio and artist promoter.
In 1996, Roland graduated from Fundacion Escuela Superior Profesional (INPAHU) in Bogota, completing his education in journalism. Following his graduation from INPAHU, he enrolled in Central University, where he continued his education in journalism and media relations. In 2000, Roland moved to the United States, residing in New Jersey, having been granted political asylum.
Work in Bogota
Following his graduation from INPAHU, Roland joined as intern in Noticiero TV Hoy in Bogota. After his completion of studies at Central University, he extended his career to include the reporting the Noticiero Nacional and Noti 8 of senal Colombia Additional work in Colombia included reporting regional news with Noti 5 in Cali and Hora 13 of Tele Antioquia.
Univision New York
In 2000, after working with several Colombian television news, he relocated to the United States, settling in New Jersey. Since 2002, he has been working with New York's Univision news affiliate, WXTV-DT, first as a reporter and eventually as a news anchor and producer. Broadcast on channel 41, WXTV is a Univision owned-and-operated television station, located in Teaneck, New Jersey and serving the New York metropolitan area.
Roland notably produces the segment "Our People", which highlights the work of Latin Americans living in the United States. He has also produced and presented reports on immigration and political issues, along with entertainment industry news.
His work in the world of journalism has been recognized by members of the Council of the City of New York, as well as the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Dominican Journalists Association. In 2004, Roland was honored with the "Best of the Best" award by the New Jersey Broadcasters Association for his series "The Many Faces of the Coyote".
In 2008, Roland served as the cameraman, reporter, and producer for a segment on the Amazon rain forest in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. His report, entitled "No Boundaries", received the Emmy Award for the Best Report of the Year.
In 2009, Roland received the Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Journalism, along with the Ace Award from The Association of Entertainment Critics of New York.
