In 1989 he played in one first grade match for the Parramatta Eels at halfback, becoming the 481st player for the club.

He, and a few other players, were qualified for several grades; him being the one moved up into the first grade side to take on the North Sydney Bears. They won that game 30 - 6. Speaking about his only first grade match, he revealed he went into the game with a torn hamstring. He called himself "disgraceful and sub-par" as a rugby league player. "There's been about 9000 - 9500 people that have been NRL football since 1908, it's safe to say I'm in the bottom-half dozen on that list."

Since retiring he has become a journalist and now works for The Daily Telegraph and is the co-host on NRL 360. He has written two books; Sonny Ball and Johnny Lewis: The Biography — about Sonny Bill Williams and Johnny Lewis, respectively. Sonny Ball was chosen as one of the best sports books of 2015 by Australian newspaper The New Daily. Kent is a weekly panel member for Triple M's Sunday NRL Show.
