Violin player Camille (Emmanuelle Beart) begins an affair with Maxime (Andre Dussollier), who is prepared to leave his wife. But then Camille goes to Maximes violin repair shop and meets his employee, Stephane (Daniel Auteuil), and she instantly falls in love. While Camille freely expresses her emotions for Stephane, he acts increasingly introverted, shunning her affections even though he cares for her, too. Camille soon becomes obsessed in her determination to win Stephane over.

A Heart in Winter (fr. Un cœur en hiver) is a French film which was released in 1992. It was directed by Claude Sautet, stars Emmanuelle Beart, Daniel Auteuil and Andre Dussollier, and is distributed by Koch-Lorber Films. It entered the competition at the 49th Venice International Film Festival.

Beautiful violin virtuoso Camille has two obsessions: the music of Ravel, and a friend of her husband's who crafts violins. But his heart seems to be as cold as her playing is passionate.

Plot
Made in 1992, Un Coeur En Hiver was French writer/director Claude Sautets first feature film in four years. In his own simple, unadorned fashion, Sautet weaves a compelling yarn about the tragic consequences of misguided love. Daniel Auteuil plays a lonely violin restorer Stephane who falls hard for gorgeous concert violinist Camille. Alas, she is the beloved of Stephanes married partner Maxime. In his efforts to win Camille away from his partner, Stephane stumbles down the road to disaster. Counterpointing the passions spent in Un Coeur En Hiver are the exquisite chamber compositions of Ravel.

Music
An important part of the film is the use of chamber music by Maurice Ravel, played by Jean-Jacques Kantorow (violin), Howard Shelley (piano) and Keith Harveyr (cello). New Zealand musician Jeffrey Grice appears in the film in the role of the pianist.
The film contains only excerpts of Ravel compositions, but the soundtrack album includes them in their entirety, performed by Jean-Jacques Kantorow (violin), Philippe Muller (cello) and Jacques Rouvier (piano). A fourth Ravel composition not excerpted in the film, Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Faure, is on the soundtrack album. The film helped further popularise especially Ravels Piano Trio.
