The 44th Parliament of Australia was a meeting of the legislative branch of the Australian federal government, composed of the Australian Senate and the Australian House of Representatives. It met in Canberra from 12 November 2013 to 9 May 2016. The 2013 general election gave the Coalition of the Liberal and National Parties control of the House, allowing their leader Tony Abbott to take office as the 27th Prime Minister of Australia.

Major events

  • 12 November 2013: At the first sitting day Bronwyn Bishop was elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Stephen Parry was elected President of the Senate.
  • 7 November 2014: Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed a joint sitting of Parliament.
  • 18 November 2014: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a joint session of Parliament.
  • 10 August 2015: Upon the resignation of Bronwyn Bishop, Tony Smith was elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
  • 14 September 2015: Tony Abbott is replaced as leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, and consequently Prime Minister, by Malcolm Turnbull.
  • 15 April 2016: The Parliament is prorogued by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove on the advice of the Prime Minister.
  • 18 April 2016: The Parliament is opened for its second session, with the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove delivering a Government speech.
  • Major legislation

  • 17 July 2014: The Senate passed the Clean Energy Legislation (Carbon Tax Repeal) Act 2013, removing the previous government's carbon price.
  • 2 September 2014: Both Houses passed the Mining Tax Repeal Bill, repealing the Minerals Resource Rent Tax.
  • Second Session

    On 21 March 2016 Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that he had advised Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove to prorogue parliament effective xx and recall parliament for a second session on 18 April 2016. This was the first time in nearly four decades that parliament had been recalled for a second session. Labor Senator Stephen Conroy labelled the recalling of parliament a "tawdry political stunt" and accused the Governor-General of "demeaning his office".

    Dissolution

    The term of the 44th Parliament ended on 9 May 2016 when Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove dissolved both Houses of Parliament for the Double Dissolution election of 2 July 2016.
