The 2016 Campeonato Carioca de Futebol was the 113th edition of the main division of football in Rio de Janeiro. The contest is organized by FERJ. The top four teams will compete in 2017 Copa do Brasil.

On 4 August 2015, in meeting the arbitral tribunal, it was decided to form of dispute of this edition, which will be different from previous editions. Also, due to 2016 Summer Olympics preparations, the Maracanã Stadium and Estádio Olímpico João Havelange were unavailable except for the finals. Therefore, derbies were moved to large stadiums in other cities.

The sixteen sides were split into two groups of eight, with the top four from both groups advancing to the promotion stage (Taça Guanabara) and the bottom four from both groups advancing to the relegation stage (Taça Rio).
