During the lockout, the Hornets were dealt with a cruel blow, trading Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers. In their first season without their star playmaker, the Hornets finished the season with a mediocre 21–45 record. This led the team to drafting Anthony Davis from Kentucky with the first overall pick of the 2012 NBA draft.

Key dates

  • June 23: The 2011 NBA draft took place at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
  • Pre-season

Due to the 2011 NBA lockout negotiations, the programmed pre-season schedule, along with the first two weeks of the regular season were scrapped, and a two-game pre-season was set for each team once the lockout concluded.
