The 1988-89 NBA season was the Hawks' 40th season in the NBA and 21st season in Atlanta. After falling into the second round for two straight seasons, the Hawks acquired Reggie Theus and Moses Malone during the offseason. However, they would lose Kevin Willis for the entire season with a knee injury suffered during the preseason. The Hawks finished third in the Central Division with a 52–30 record. In the first round of the playoffs, they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in five games.
