Structure

The National Hurling League's top division was divided into two groups - 1A and 1B. The top two teams in Division 1A advance to the semi-finals. The third- and fourth-placed teams in 1A, as well as the top two from 1B, play in the quarter-finals. The bottom team in 1A are relegated, while the top team in 1B are promoted.

Division 1

After a relatively successful run through the group stages, recording just one loss from five games, Galway won their third league title ever, their first since 1950-51. Tipperary, who were league runners-up, finished third in Division 1A courtesy of three wins, three draws and a loss.

Down at the other end of the tables, Waterford lost all but one of their group stage games and were relegated to Division 1B. They swapped places with Galway who topped Division 1B and gained promotion to the top flight in Division 1A for the following season. Wicklow and Antrim lost all of their group stage games, however, since Antrim had a superior points difference they preserved their Division 1 status.
