Prior to his call as a general authority, Abrea was the first stake president in Argentina (1966–71; 1976–78); he also served as a regional representative (1971–76) and as president of the church's Argentina Rosario Mission (1978–81).

Abrea was called by LDS Church president Spencer W. Kimball as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy on 20 March 1981.
