Zouheir

"Zouheir" is the first name of a security guard at the Stade de France in Paris. He was present at the stadium when it was the target of an attack on 13 November 2015. Zouheir gave an interview to The Wall Street Journal in which he described being told that the attempted suicide bomber was searched by staff at the stadium before detonating his bomb.

Zouheir's story went viral, and it was misinterpreted by some social media users that he himself had searched the attempted bomber. Although there was no statement in the WSJ piece that Zouheir followed any religion, he was deemed a "Muslim hero" who stood against those who used the same faith as an excuse for violence. The Muslim Council of Britain took out a page-long advertisement in newspapers, naming Zouheir as a true representative of their faith. In the Daily Mail, Piers Morgan named Zouheir as a good Muslim role model, alongside Cosa Nostra staff member Safer who risked his life to protect women in an attack on the same night, and Lassana Bathily who hid customers during an attack on a kosher supermarket in January 2015. According to the BBC, Safer's act of bravery was largely ignored as social media users focussed on the misinterpreted story of Zouheir.

A writer in The Herald cited the case of Zouheir as evidence of the perils of using social media as a source of news during a fast-moving event.
