Suikang Zhao (in Chinese Zhao Suikang 赵穗康) (1956-) is a Chinese artist who works on many different media including monumental public projects.

Life

Born in Shanghai, China in 1956, Zhao has lived in the U.S. since 1986. Zhao finished his graduate study at School of Visual Arts in New York 1990. Zhao is a professor and head of sculpture at Fine Arts Department, Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York.

Works

Zhao has done many paintings, sculptures, media-site-specific installations that involves moving images and sound. Zhao’s artwork has huge scale yet with intimate touch. Since 1989, Zhao has worked many permanent public art commissions. His roster includes:

  • Winds of Aphrodite at Bartle Hall Convention Center—Bartle Hall North Dock, MO, completed in 2008.
  • Hands, Hairy Text and Columns, at three stations for Valley Metro, AZ, completed in 2008
  • Script of Vine—a trilogy of Inventions, prelude and fugue, tribute to J.S. Bach at Oregon State University, Health and Counseling Center, Eugene, OR, completed in 2007
  • Dreams of Sky at Celentano School, New Haven, CT, completed in 2005
  • Portland Pamphlets at Oregon Bureau of General Service, City of Portland,OR completed in 1999
